Celebrated as Western Canada’s first university, the University of Manitoba is Manitoba’s largest post-secondary institution, its only medical-doctoral university, and a member of Canada’s U15 group of research universities. The University’s community comprises more than 30,000 students, 5,700+ academic faculty, and 4,000+ support staff. As a driving force of innovation, discovery and advancement, the University contributes $2.4 billion annually to Manitoba’s economy. 

Over the last several years, the University has launched a number of major initiatives: the establishment of a Vice-President (Indigenous) – the first such leadership position in the country, and the Front and Centre fundraising campaign, which raised over $626 million. These accomplishments reflect the University of Manitoba team’s commitment to making legacy improvements that benefit the community and generations to come. 

It is in this context that the University of Manitoba seeks a dynamic leader to assume the position of Associate Vice-President, Marketing and Communications (AVP) and invites applications and nominations for the position. 

Reporting to the Vice-President (External), the AVP is a dynamic subject matter expert whose work results in a greater voice and position for the University as an internationally engaged post-secondary institution; a major destination for alumni and philanthropic engagement, and an institution recognized locally, nationally and internationally for its impact.  The AVP has three primary areas of responsibility; University brand, marketing and creative; digital strategy and engagement; and strategic communications. The AVP is a key member of the Vice-President’s Executive Team and represents External Relations at the most senior levels, internal and external to the University of Manitoba including the President, Vice-Presidents, Associate Vice-Presidents and Vice-Provosts, Deans and Directors. The AVP is responsible for developing resource and strategic plans for each part of the portfolio, aligned to the University of Manitoba’s strategic planning framework and External Relations’ vision and team purpose.  

While no one individual is an expert in all of the areas represented in the AVP portfolio, the ideal candidate has extensive senior level experience in marketing and brand strategy in a complex, multi stakeholder environment, preferably in a post-secondary education setting, coupled with experience balancing multiple tasks across multiple stakeholder groups. Candidates must also have experience developing strategic communications and marketing plans along with experience working in a variety of integrated communications mediums including web, all digital/social, print, direct mail, ads, etc. The AVP will be skilled at managing senior staff and leading teams, with demonstrated success in motivating and mentoring multi-generational teams who bring different perspectives and expertise to the workplace environment. As the ideal candidate, you are accustomed to leading a team through change, and with incorporating best practices of change management. You are familiar and comfortable with using technology and data to drive increased resources including philanthropic dollars, student recruitment and research grants.  Given the collegial, decentralized governance structure that characterizes the university setting, the successful candidate must have a collaborative and consultative style of leadership, be willing to listen to alternate perspectives, and be skilled at encouraging dialogue around difficult issues. Candidates must hold a university degree from a recognized university.
